STEPS Engineers Week: Resources for Post Primary students

Post Primary teachers and students, it's time to explore engineering this STEPS Engineers Week

Engineers Ireland's STEPS programme is calling on students and teachers across Ireland to bring the world of engineering to life in their classroom during STEPS Engineers Week.

Taking place from 4-10 March, STEPS Engineers Week provides Post Primary classes with the opportunity to explore the creative world of engineering and the diverse opportunities a career in the sector can offer.

With free resources available in both English and Irish on Engineers Ireland’s website, Post Primary students and their teachers are encouraged to download free engineering challenge packs, sustainability challenges, and quizzes, and to sign-up for free, on-demand virtual engineering shows by leading STEM performers 'Mark the Science Guy’ and ‘Scientific Sue’.

1. Take the Sustainable Engineering Challenge

Have you heard about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)? These goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

Engineers are key to help achieve many of the UN SDGs. Take the Sustainable Engineering Challenge and find out more about why engineers are vital to achieving these goals.

2. Create wind turbines and find out more about renewable energy

The January Wind Energy Report showed that 41% of the Ireland's power came from wind. Wind farms produced 1,479 gigawatt-hours of electricity in January, the equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 320,000 Irish families. Explore wind energy and wind turbine design by creating a wind turbine with this activity pack.

3. Watch the Engineering Excellence Digital Series

Engineers Ireland's six-part Engineering Excellence Digital Series, held in association with ESB, shines a light on the creative ways Ireland’s engineers seek to support and transform society.

Find out more about the top projects completed by Ireland’s engineers in 2022 and gain insight into the careers of those who feature in the series here.

4. My Engineering Life

Find out more about engineering in Ireland and the vital role engineers play to protect and enhance society. Watch presentations from Jenna Bromell and David Purcell, members of the Thomond Region of Engineers Ireland, as they discuss their life as an engineer.

5. Stream on-demand engineering shows

Explore the wonders of electricity and the many inventions that power our world or find out more about the role of engineering in sport. Stream on-demand engineering shows created by Ireland's leading STEM performers 'Scientific Sue’ and ‘Mark the Science Guy’.
