Heritage Week highlights for young people aged 10 to 17!

National Heritage Week is running from 13-21 August and there are over 1,500 events planned in-person and online.

It's nearly impossible to narrow it all down, but we hope we can help a bit. Thanks to our friends at the Heritage Council here's some things for younger kids and teens to enjoy!

Tipperary - Building Our Future

Tipperary Excel Arts Centre 13 & 20 August 10am - 5pm

What's the story with Tipperary Town's Architectural Conservation Area? What does it mean to local young people?

Find out with two special workshop during Heritage Week. Young people will be invited to participate in place making activities, model making, art and junk art workshops, expert led talks on building re-use as well as a youth photography competition.

Ernest Shackleton's ship - The Endurance

Creative Explorers Basecamp

Athy Community Arts Centre 16 - 18 August 10:30am to 1:30pm

Join Blueway Art Studio in the heart of Shackleton country in Athy, County Kildare and draw inspiration from our local creative heroes, Mary, Kathleen and legendary Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.

Over three days during Heritage Week, we will experiment with eco-practices to create our own materials, handmade books and a series of prints. Whilst learning from the past, the children will explore their sense of place and look to the future through our eco-activities. For ages 10-15

Creative Lab for Teens: Visual Journaling with Mixed Media for Well-being

The Chester Beatty in Dublin 16 August 2:30pm to 4:30pm

A journal is a friend that's always there: it is a place to capture ideas, reflect on life and express our innermost thoughts.

Explore the benefits of journaling with Jen O'Brien and learn how to travel through your inner world using a wide variety of techniques – write, print, collage, paint - the choice is yours. Suitable for teens aged 12 to 17 years. It's free but booking is essential!

Painting the Simurgh - the Magical Bird of Power

Online 16 August Starting at 6pm

This online workshop from Chester Beatty looks at the Isfahan painting.

The simurgh arrives to assist with the birth of Rustam, you can create a new image of this wonderful bird. Artist Pantea Karimi will explain how to combine freehand drawing and collage to reimagine simurgh's powerful magic.

It's free but Zoom booking is required. Suitable for teens aged 12 - 17 years.
