FÍS film storyboard competition: Deadline extended!

Irish primary schools have more time to enter the FÍS Storyboard Storytelling competition, a one-off Covid-19 special initiative open to all primary schools in the Republic of Ireland.

With the annual awards not running this year due to Covid FÍS have come up with something new and exciting to keep the creative juices flowing into the the new year.

Before anything is filmed, you need a story, and then you need a storyboard to visualise what exactly you are going to see on camera. It is a really important part of film-making and this competition will reward the best ideas.

The Storyboard Storytelling competition is open for entries until 26 March 2021.

A full brief, judging criteria and how to enter this exciting competition is available at www.fisfilmproject.ie. The brief provides suggested themes & topics, storyboard presentation tips, judging criteria and general competition guidelines for teachers.

The FÍS Storyboard Storytelling competition provides an opportunity for pupils to visually interpret a story or concept or curriculum topic, use artistic media and different types of shots to convey that story in an imaginative and creative way.

Here's a simple example of a storyboard.

For the past 20 years there has a been an annual FÍS Film Awards, but due to Covid-19 restrictions and health and safety concerns, like so many other events it has to be cancelled.

Instead, on the date the event was scheduled, the FÍS partnership announced the Storyboard Storytelling competition as a one-off that would allow schools to explore the idea of visually interpreting a story, a poem or a curriculum topic as a foundation for progressing to film or animation making in the future.

In April the annual FÍS film competition will be open and teachers who wish to introduce film making into their primary school classroom can tap into a very wide range of resources.

There is a Teacher's Guide, 13 video tutorials, two comprehensive series of interactive lessons for children in live-action and animation, two practice videos and lots more.
