This experiment gives you lots to think about and brings in different topics.
There is science with how magnets work. Geography is there too, as we discover the Earth's magnetic field and then there is the engineering with the motor.

Equipment and Important Notes for Tutors:
Bar Magnets (for handing out to class and for battery coil demo)
Iron Filing cases
Batteries and copper coil for Homopolar motors
Human circuit LED tubes
The stronger magnets can snap together and pinch fingers or even damage phones and smart watches.
Have wires prepared that are least 8cm and have 1.5cm exposed metal.
Use numbered motors so the children can identify which robot is theirs in the battle.
Make sure the motor has some glue or plastic on the rotator to cause the "shimmy" motion.
During the battle only allow tutors to have their hands in the arena.
If your robot falls over, you're out.
If your robot stops moving, you’re out.
Make sure to incorporate the scientific process steps throughout the lesson. When making Bristlebots make sure to also include the design and making process. Establishing a sense of familiarity with the students on these will improve their scientific thinking as well as instilling the framework of future lessons. Remember to ask trigger questions and be inclusive, reminding them that science is all about asking what we don’t know!
