In May 2020, the 'Become A Young Storykeeper' initiative, developed by The Commissioners of Irish Lights’ (Irish Lights) tourism and community partnership, Great Lighthouses of Ireland, and creative writing organisation Fighting Words, invited all 7-12 year olds to become Young Storykeepers - to get creative and devise an original lighthouse-inspired story.
It was a huge success with 1,249 entries submitted, these fantastic works are showcased in a multi-volume digital magazine from June to November this year.
Volume Two is now live and here are a selection of the stories that have been animated with thanks to the voluntary work of the Fighting for Words animators and illustrators.
At the top of the article we see 'The Flashing Lighthouse' stop-motion animation by 10-year-old Katie Wheedle from Dublin.
Press play below to watch 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Children & the Magic Flute' by 11-year-old Imogen Price, from Down. Illustrations and animations by Marie Stamp.
Launched as part of Cruinniú na nÓg’ s 2020 programme Young Storykeepers from all around Ireland and overseas submitted their imaginative creations in their droves!
From swashbuckling stories to stop-motion animation, poems, illustrations and even a song or two, their efforts have been incredible.
And here is 'The Lighthouse' by 7-year-old Felipe Kinane from Kildare.
Volume two of the Young Storykeepers digital magazine is now live on both the Great Lighthouses of Ireland and the Fighting Words websites.
