What is online advertising?

The internet can provide us with lots of useful information about things that interest us and show us adverts to help us find things we might like to buy or do.

This edition of our Webwise Wednesdays asks - What is Online Advertising?

In this video the HTML Heroes, Archie and Ruby explain all the different kinds of advertising we can come across when browsing the internet, so we can understand why they are there and what to do about them.

Key safety points:

There are lots of ads on the internet – just like on TV. But on the internet, they can pop up anywhere. When you're reading or watching something it’s important to know if someone’s trying to sell you something.

Examples of online advertising include pop us ads on websites, games and apps, influencers videos and blog posts, clickbait headlines and sponsored social media posts.

If a pop up appears on your screen while browsing a website and you are not sure about it, close it down by clicking the X button and tell an adult as soon as possible.

Never buy or download a game or pay for anything in a game without asking permission from a parent or guardian first.

Check your understanding of online advertising by matching up the correct lyrics from Ruby and Archie's rap - What is Online Advertising?
