Welcome to the first of our Webwise Wednesdays!
Each Wednesday we are going to learn all about the internet and how we can be safe online! Webwise Wednesdays is created in partnership with Webwise (the Irish Internet Safety Awareness Center).
There are 8 lessons in the programme covering a variety of topics including skills needed for browsing the web such as effective and safe searching, determining what content can be trusted and managing screen time along with the skills required to safely and effectively communicate online. It also deals with relevant topics such as online advertising, sharing personal information online, cyberbullying and gaming online.
HTML Heroes: An Introduction to the Internet is an online education programme developed to teach children between the ages of 7 and 10 about the safe and responsible uses of the internet.

Meet the HTML Heroes
The HTML Heroes are two USB characters, Ruby and Archie, come to life when the classroom empties at break-time to introduce children to the online world and how to stay safe online through performing catchy and fun internet safety raps.
In this video the HTML Heroes, Archie and Ruby, introduce us to the online world, showing us what a great tool the internet is for helping us learn, create, communicate and play.

Key safety points
● The internet is a network or 'web' that connects all computers worldwide giving us instant access to a mine of information.
● You can connect to the internet through a computer using a wired connection or through any smart device e.g. smart phone, TV, watch that can connect through a wireless connection, commonly known as a "wi-fi" connection.
● It’s important to be aware of how much time you are spending in front of a screen (your screen time) so you can make sure you are keeping a healthy balance between time online and offline - communicating, learning, playing in person.
● The internet is a brilliant tool - you can have a lot of fun, you can learn, create, play but the number one rule is you gotta STAY SAFE!
