Make & Do: Homemade Clay

Múinteoir Clíona showed us a great way to make homemade clay today.  Here's how!

What you need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3/4 to 1 cup water
  • Food colouring (optional)

How to make

1) In a large bowl, mix flour, salt and vegetable oil.

2) Add water and stir until you get a nice clay consistency.

3) If you want the dough to be different colours, separate the clay into portions and put them in a bowl. Add a couple of drops of food colouring to each portion and mix well with a spoon. Be prepared that the food colouring may stain your fingers while working with it!

4) Time to start sculpting!

5) Roll out the dough into long snake like coils and build them one on top of each other! Then, you can connect the coils together by using a blunt knife or a spoon to smooth the coils into each other!

6) Next, use the latching technique.  This is where you use a crisscross pattern using a sharp point and putty made of dough and water, like glue, to stick designs on to the pottery!

7) When your creation is done you can put it in the oven at 120˚C until it's hard but not burnt! When it’s cool, decorate it whatever way you want!

Model Monuments

Can you name the famous landmarks we've made out of clay?

GAME: CLAY CHARADES

Why not play a game with the whole family using the clay you've made?

Write the names of animals on pieces of paper, fold them over, put them in a bowl, then each player picks out an animal and has to try to make it out of clay in 60 seconds, while the other players try to guess what it is?

Whoever guesses correctly makes the next clay animal.
