A Step in the Write Direction

Múinteoir Ray taught us all about tired or boring words today and what we can do to make them more interesting when using them in a sentence.  Look at the words below, and see if you can come up with two other words that are similar to the word, but more interesting!  We've done the first one as an example.

Game: Make A Connection

This activity works best with two or more people.  Write these connecting words on different slips of paper, fold each one over, and put them into a bowl.

The first person picks one out and they have to make up a sentence with the connecting word in it.  Then the next person picks out a connecting word, and has to continue the story, using that word.  Keep choosing words until there are none left.  You never know what way the story is going to go.  Have fun!

Stimulus Story

A stimulus is something that inspires you to get writing.  It can be a letter, a photo, a picture, an object – anything that helps you come up with ideas for a story.

Have a look at this picture and write your own short story about what's happening in it.  See if you can use words that aren’t tired or boring, like the ones we discussed before.  When looking at this picture, think about things like:

  • Who are these children?
  • What is happening in the sky?
  • Do you think it might be aliens?
  • Why do the children have backpacks?
  • Were they going camping?
  • Have they run away from home?

Reading books is a great way to get some inspiration for your own stories.  Why not start your own book club at home?

Everyone sits down together and chooses the same book to read and then you all meet every couple of weeks to discuss the book and see what everyone thinks.

You could even organise a quiz about the book and see who remembers the most.  It's a great way to get conversations going as well!
