Flower-Painting Techniques
As Múinteoir John showed us, there are many techniques that you can use to create pictures of flowers at home, even if you don't have lots of art supplies.
Straw Stems
Place a blob of paint on a sheet of card or paper, then using a straw, blow it at different angles to spread the paint into different shapes and create the stems of the plant or flower. Decorate whatever way you want!
Cotton Buds
Using cotton buds tied together spread the paint in wavy lines to create flower stems. Decorate with flower buds and leaves.
Fork Flowers
Create some beautiful tulips by dipping a fork into paint, then pressing it down to create the flower shape. Make sure to wash the fork well afterwards!
There are so many designs you can create using items at home. See what you can find and please send them into us!

Make and Do: Summer Flower
With all the toilet-paper purchases in recent times, there are bound to be some empty toilet rolls in your house! A crafty way to re-use them is by turning them into a beautiful summer flower to bring some cheer into your home.
What you need:
- 4 empty toilet rolls for each flower you want to make.
- A stapler
- Sticky tape
- A stick for the stem
- Colourful paints
Step 1: Fold three rolls in half but make sure their edges stay curved and you don't crush them (these are the petals of the flower).
Step 2: Staple the two halves together as shown and do this with each of the three rolls.
Step 3: Staple one petal on each roll, to the petal on the next folded roll so that you end up with a circle of petals, stapled together. Ta da! That's your flower!
Step 4: Use a thin wooden stick (a stick or a twig from the garden will do!) as the stem of the flower, and attach it using a staple if you can, or else sticky tape.
Step 5: Fold over the fourth toilet roll and attach it to the other end of the stick (using a few staples or else some sticky tape). This forms the leaves of the flower at the bottom.
Step 6: Be as creative as you want when painting your flower. The more imaginative, the better!
Flower Funnies
We're having a laugh with these flower jokes!
- How do two flowers greet each other? "Hey bud, how’s it growing?"
- What do you call a grandpa flower? Poppy.
- What did the flower say after he told a joke? I was just pollen your leg!
