1st and 2nd Class: Drama - Images

Freeze Frames

Múinteoir Ray's drama class today revolved around freeze frames. Freeze frames are a great drama exercise where you create an image using only your body and imagination and without using words or movement.  You can make the image on your own or with others.

Freeze frames can be used to tell stories, represent people, objects and even emotions.

Warm Up: Musical Statues

You know how to do this one.  Just clear the floor, get someone to stop and start the music, and get boogying until the DJ presses stop, and then you FREEZE!  Whoever moves is out.  Add a twist to the game by getting the DJ to choose different ways you have to pose when the music stops e.g. dinosaur, rock star, monkey, banana or whatever the DJ can think of.  The sillier the better!

Activity 2

Now you are warmed up let's put your acting skills to the test.

Here is a list of objects, animals, or occasions for you to try and create in a freeze frame.  Write them out on pieces of paper and put them in a bowl.   Choose your piece of paper and then you have 20 seconds to use your body to mime or act like whatever is written on the paper, and then you must freeze!

Crocodile, Winning the lottery, Hedgehog, Opening a present, Table, Doing a sky dive, Umbrella

….and come up with some of your own.

Here’s Múinteoir Ray acting like a happy pineapple.

Fairy Tale Tableau

Tableau is another name for freeze frames created with others. For this exercise try and create three different freeze frames to illustrate a well know fairy tale.  Scene 1 should be "The Beginning," Scene 2 should show "The Middle," and Scene 3 will represent "The End."

Have other family members guess what it is.  Get them to take pictures to send to us so we can guess too.

Sketch out your ideas for each freeze frame below.
