Analogue & Digital Clocks

Today, Múinteoir John told us about two types of clocks - Analogue and Digital.

Analogue: A clock or watch is called "analogue" when it has moving hands and (usually) hours marked from 1 to 12 to show you the time. Some have Roman Numerals (I, II, III, etc) instead, or no numbers at all!

Digital: A digital clock or watch displays the time digitally and doesn't have hands the way an analogue clock does.  It can display a:

  • 12 hour clock – The numbers on the left side go from 01 to 12, whether it is AM/Morning or PM/Evening.
  • A 24 hour clock - The numbers go from 01 to 12 in the AM and 13 to 00 in the PM.  Note:  It won’t read as 24:00 when it gets to midnight.  Instead it will go back to 00:00.

See if you can translate these times from analogue to digital.  The first two are done as examples and the answers are at the bottom of the sheet so that you can check them when you're done.

  1. 8 O'CLOCK (AM) 08:00
  2. QUARTER PAST TEN (PM) 22:15
  3. TWENTY PAST ELEVEN (AM) ______
  4. TEN PAST FIVE (PM) ______
  5. TWO O’CLOCK (PM) ______
  6. QUARTER TO FOUR (AM) ______
  7. HALF PAST SEVEN (AM) ______
  8. TWENTY TO NINE (PM) ______
  9. TEN TO ELEVEN (AM) ______
  10. QUARTER PAST 12 (AM) ______

Hands Up! What Time is it?

Write what time each of the clocks is showing below, in 12 hour time or 24 hour time.  Answers are at the bottom of the sheet.

Game Time! What's The Time Mr. Wolf? (3+ Players)

Here's a fun game for you to play outside.  You’ll need at least 3 players and a bit of space to run around.

1) Choose someone to be Mr. Wolf, and that person stands at one end with their back to the other players.

2) The other players stand together at the opposite end and shout as loudly as possible: "WHAT’S THE TIME MR. WOLF?!"

3) Mr. Wolf answers with different times - "one o'clock" or "eight o'clock", for example.

4) The players take that number of steps towards Mr. Wolf - eight steps for eight o'clock, and so on.

5) The players ask again, "What's the time Mr. Wolf?" and take that number of steps, always getting closer to Mr. Wolf.

6) When Mr. Wolf feels like it, he (or she) answers "DINNERTIME!!" and turns around and starts chasing the other players.

7) The first to be caught becomes the next Mr. Wolf.  If nobody is caught, then the same person is Mr. Wolf again.
