Ways we can help stop Climate Change

There is no Planet B so we have to look after the one we have.  Here are a few ways we can help with climate change.

1) Grow Your Own

If you have a garden or balcony try and grow your own fruit, vegetables, and herbs.  The plants will help remove the greenhouse gas CO2 (carbon dioxide) from the air.  Also growing your own food will cut down on the CO2 emissions created by the factories that pack fruit and vegetables and the trucks that deliver them.  And they will also taste way better!

2) Reduce your Carbon Footprint by reducing the energy you use.  You can do this by –

  • Turning off lights, TVs, computers, when you do not need them.
  • Unplug electronic gadgets like the TV, DVD player or games console.  They use power even when they are switched off.
  • Put on a jumper when its cold instead of automatically asking to turn on the heat.
  • Walk or cycle when you can instead of taking the car.

3) Reduce your waste

  • Recycle everything you can
  • Reuse, Upcycle or Swap your things instead of binning them when you are finished with them.
  • Try and use as little plastic as possible by using reusable bags for the shopping, use your own reusable bottle of water instead of buying bottled water and buy products with little or no packaging.

Sing Song

In today's lesson Múinteoir Clíona taught you the song Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell that includes some environmental messages within its lyrics.  Have a sing along at home!

Big Yellow Taxi

They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Til it's gone
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
Shoo, bop, bop, bop, bop
Shoo, bop, bop, bop, bop

They took all the trees
Put them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people
A dollar and a half to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Til it's gone
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot
Shoo, bop, bop, bop, bop
Shoo, bop, bop, bop, bop

Hey, farmer, farmer
Put away the DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Til it's gone
They paved paradise
Put up a parking lot

Answers: Quiz

  1. False. Weather is the condition of the environment at any time e.g. raining, windy, sunny etc. Climate is the average pattern of the weather conditions taken over a long period for a region. Example – The weather in the Sahara today could be rainy but the area has a desert climate.
  2. a) Burning fossils fuels & d) Cow farts and burps that contain Methane gas
  3. b) Carbon Dioxide Gas
  4. Some of the negative effects of climate change include - rising temperatures causing more extreme weather, drought and melting ice caps. Rising sea levels mean we lose land for animals and humans to live.
  5. Deforestation is the clearing or cutting down of forests.
  6. a) There is nothing holding the soil down so it can be blown or washed away. This can leave an area infertile and also be the cause of devastating landslides.
    b) There are no trees to absorb the carbon dioxide in the air and release pure oxygen back into the atmosphere. Therefore, there is more of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the planet gets warmer. Burning the trees releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
