Fascinating Facts about France

  • Horse riders in Europe used to ride on the left side of the road, until French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte decided to change this to surprise his enemies.  That is why many countries now drive on the right-hand side of the road but in Ireland (which was never conquered by Napoleon) we still drive on the left.

  • Some French people really do eat snails!  These are special edible snails though and not the same ones you typically find in your garden.

  • The Statue of Liberty in New York was actually a gift from France to America and the same Frenchman who created the Eiffel Tower (Gustave Eiffel), also created the Statue of Liberty.

Make and Do

Wasn't Clíona’s Parisian house just wonderful?  Here are the instructions so you can make your very own one at home!

What you need:

  • Cereal box (or a milk/juice carton – see what's in the recycling!)
  • Paper
  • Paints or colouring pencils/crayons
  • Card
  • Crepe/tissue paper
  • Glue

How to Make:

1) First, get your cereal box and prop up the roof.  Use card to do this, and fill in the sides.

2) Next, glue paper onto the surface of the box.  This makes it much easier to paint!

3) Paint the walls first and then the roof.

4) Draw the windows and glue them on.

5) Draw the door next and glue that on as well.

6) Create balconies by drawing small rectangles with bars on them.

7) You can also add a street name if you'd like and "voila!", as they say in France.  Your very own Parisian house!
