Ireland has so many marvellous myths.  Did you know...

1) The 'Pooka' are one of the most feared mythical beings in Ireland. These are believed to be little goblins that dress up as scary creatures and go out at night to terrorise people.

2) Legend has it, that the Salmon of Knowledge ate nine hazelnuts that fell into the Well of Wisdom and that's where it gained all the world's knowledge.

3) The name 'Leprechaun’ apparently comes from the Irish expression "leath bhrógan" which means "shoemaker".

4) Some Irish people believe that butterflies are messengers of the fairies and they represent journeys between worlds in search of knowledge.

5) Louth is known as Cúchulainn Country because Cúchulainn is thought to have grown up there.

Activity: Legendary Limbo

Ancient warriors in Ireland needed to be highly skilled and very fit to stay at the top of their game.  Start your warrior training, with a game of Legendary Limbo!  The easiest way is with 3 or more people, but if you don't have enough people, you can use objects instead!

  • Two people hold either end of a long stick at chest height.  It can be a brush with a long handle if you can't find a long stick in the house or garden.  If you don’t have two people, get two chairs or a few boxes and balance the stick across them.

  • Turn on some fun tunes to get the game started.

  • Take turns going under the stick without touching it.  Bend your knees as much as you can and lean back as far as necessary.  Be careful not to fall!

  • No hands are allowed to touch the floor.

  • The game is easy at first but with each round the stick gets lower.

  • Anyone who knocks the stick off, falls or touches the ground with their hands is out!
