Save Energy and Help our Planet

Our homes use energy all day, every day. Our fridge, dishwasher, washing machine and cooker all use electricity. Lights, phones and computers need energy to work too.

Fossil fuels like oil and coal, that can pollute our planet, are sometimes used to make the energy to run our homes, so we should all try our best to use less energy.

Turn off the lights: Turn off and plug out anything that uses electricity when you are not using it e.g lights, computers, TV and chargers.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Think, can you reuse something instead of throwing it out e.g give your clothes away, make a tea light holder from a jar, or turn an old sock into a puppet.   Recycle as much as you can; it takes a lot less energy to recycle than to make new materials.  Reduce the amount of food waste by having a compost bin.

Close the Fridge Door: Don't keep the fridge door open while you pour your juice or milk, the cold air gets out.

Have a shower instead of a bath: Having a short shower uses a lot less water than a bath.

Wear more clothes instead of turning on the heat: If you are feeling a bit nippy, put on a jumper instead getting your parents to turn on the heat.

Turn off the screens: Read a book, play a board game, paint a picture, do a dance, anything that doesn’t use electricity.  It’s good for you and the planet.

Save Water: Don’t leave the tap on while you are brushing your teeth and washing your hands.

Be your homes energy police. Your job is to go around the home and see can you find any ways that energy is being wasted.  Turn off lights that have been left on.
