On 3 January, Caracas, which is the capital and largest city of Venezuela, was attacked by the US military. Following these strikes, US forces seized the Venezuelan leader, Nicolás Maduro, along with his wife Cilia Flores, and brought them to New York City, where Mr Maduro appeared in court on 5 January.
He was charged with drug trafficking offenses, which means that he's been accused of moving or selling illegal and dangerous drugs. However, Mr Maduro has denied this and has declared himself innocent.
While President Nicolás Maduro is being held, US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will temporarily govern Venezuela. There have been a whirlwind of emotions from Venezuelans living at home and abroad, with some rejoicing, hopeful about what the future may bring. Others are uncertain about what the next chapter has in store.
There have also been mixed reactions worldwide, with countries such as Russia and China, alongside many Latin American leaders, criticising the actions of the US. However, other nations, such as Argentina and Israel, have shown support.
Ireland, alongside other EU member states, have questioned the legality of the US attack, stating that it's important for international law to be respected, and have called for a peaceful transition in Venezuela.
