news2day Explainer: Why is Greenland in the news?

Greenland has been making a lot of headlines recently. To help everyone understand what is going on, Cathal is here with a news2day Explainer. Press play above to watch the special report.

Greenland is the world's largest island and is located off the northeastern coast of Canada, between the United States and Europe.

It's split between the Atlantic and Arctic Ocean, and over 80% of the island is in the Arctic Circle. Even though its population is very small, Greenland's location is of great interest to the United States and President Trump.

Although Greenland is under the protection of NATO, an international military alliance, which includes the US and many countries in Europe, and a US military base already exists on the island, Mr Trump believes Greenland is not prepared to defend itself from countries like Russia and China.

Due to its position relative to the United States, he also believes that it is a national security priority that the United States take greater control of the island. President Trump has said that using the US military to help acquire Greenland is always an option.

Greenland is a territory currently under the control of Denmark, though it does have its own independent government. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on the United States to stop threatening its historical ally.

Many European leaders, including Taoiseach Micheál Martin, have voiced their support for Denmark and Greenland. Denmark also warned that should the United States try to take Greenland through military action, it would be the end of NATO.
