news2day is here to explain the US Election

Sometimes when there are really big news stories it's hard to follow what is going on. Luckily for you, the news2day crew are always here to help!

So, we asked RTÉ's Washington Correspondent Sean Whelan to make a special video for everyone at home explaining it all. Just press play up top!

Sean is over in the USA right now, just as the country goes to vote. In the report he tells us about the candidates - Former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris.

And in Part 2 of his special explainers Sean looks at how the US Voting System works.

The USA stands for the United States of America, but for the elections all 50 of these states will run their own election. The winner of each state gets all their votes as part of a system called the Electoral College.

To become President you need to get to the magic number of 270 electoral votes! Press play up top to find out all about it.

If you need some extra help understanding the Electoral College system, RTÉ News used jelly beans to help you figure it out.

The system has been used to select presidents since the 18th century, but it is rather complicated, as Jackie Fox explains...using jelly beans.
