We thought we'd start the new year with a bang and invited a whole school to the party! Well, 3rd Class from Holy Cross School in Dundrum at least. They are our DJs For A Day for the next two weeks, and they wrote the following article all about their school and their show. Take it away class!
Tune in at 4pm Saturday & Sunday on RTÉjr Radio!
The School
There are nearly 300 boys and girls in our school. We are located in the village of Dundrum in Dublin. We are lucky that our school has a long history and we have lots of space to play games and chat with friends at break time. Our school is at its present location since 1944 having previously been located in the main street near the parish church.
We are fortunate to have lots of activities in school including GAA, athletics training, chess, speech and drama, rugby, tennis, hockey, swimming, multi sports club and Irish dancing.
We have school tionól ( assembly) every Friday where one class performs a poem or song for the entire school. We put particular emphasis on our school work and children are awarded réaltaí ( stars) for working hard at handwriting or making progress in different subjects.
Our Class
We are a very busy class in Rang a Trí! There are 13 boys and 12 girls in our class. We went to the Seamus Heaney exhibition in October which was fascinating. We joined a farm webinar from a dairy farm in Galway called 'From Grass to Glass’ looking at how milk is produced.
We loved examining artefacts and ecofacts from the Stone Age workshop that visited the school in November. A pharmacist visited in December exploring the world of germs, viruses, how best to prevent getting sick and we learned about how medicines are made. We place particular emphasis on our written work and we have great fun learning Irish through making up funny sentences!
