More about Creggs RFC...

Creggs RFC is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. In that team they made it all the way to the AIL, and after reaching those heights, it was time to reinvent the club again. The reinvention program began around 2005, 2006 when we began to focus on mini rugby.

Every Saturday morning at 10am the mini’s start to arrive in the club and the excitement and mayhem begins. At present Creggs have around 300 mini players - both boys and girls. Their dedicated coaches work really hard to ensure that the children have a fantastic experience of rugby and learn the skills of the game. Mini rugby goes on until the children reach the age of 13 when they go onto youth rugby.

Creggs fields youth teams at all levels. They have been very successful in boys and girls youth rugby and teams are competitive at every level. In recent years many of the youth players have graduated to play with Connacht.

Dennis Buckley, the Connacht prop is a product of the Creggs and Connacht youth systems and they always love to see him coming back to visit us in the club. In the last five or six years we have concentrated on developing girls rugby.

Last year was a very successful year for the Creggs girls. We had six girls in the U18 half-contact team and three of them went on to play international rugby. This year the club are aiming to have a ladies senior team in the club for the first time in many years.

And Creggs are in the process of building up our inclusion rugby section. They also held Primary School inclusion rugby blitz for year where 2,000 primary school students play tag rugby. And there are regular blitz’s for children with special needs.

Creggs are in the process of integrating those with special needs fully into the club. They are building accommodation for those with special needs by providing a sensory room in the new gymnasium area. Great work everyone!

This season has seen the introduction of a special program for Transition Year students. The students will qualify as youth coaches and associates referees and will also complete a course on coaching children with special needs. This pilot program is a first for Creggs and for Connacht and we believe a first for the IRFU.

After Christmas we will also be introducing walking rugby into the club. This will allow people who have matured gracefully past the competitive age for rugby to continue to play the game. Creggs is a community-based club and this will allow the whole community to play rugby in Creggs. No matter what age you are or what level of fitness you have, they have a game of rugby suitable for you.
