Ecolution: Marking Earth Hour and some more big news!

Today sees the release of a mini episode of Ecolution ahead of the new season because there are two big things happening - it's Earth Hour and we say a fond farewell to our host James!

Tune in to RTÉjr Radio at 7pm, press play above, click here or wherever you get your podcasts!

This Saturday, 26 March sees the return of Earth Hour. The importance of showing your desire to tackle the climate crisis has never been greater. And that's what Earth Hour is all about.

Started in 2007 by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Australia to raise awareness of climate change, Earth Hour is now one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment. On the last Saturday of March each year, Earth Hour now engages supporters in more than 190 countries and territories, all taking action to ensure a brighter future by turning out the lights.

And you can get involved too.

At 8.30pm on Saturday you’re asked to switch off your lights for an hour in solidarity, showing that you’re willing to play a part in slowing climate change.

If you’re on social media you can post about it in advance.

If you like to write, why not pen a short story? Tell everyone what you want the future to look like. Or how you’d like our leaders to help. Or if you have a climate hero you think deserves more recognition.

Head to EarthHour.org to submit a story and add your voice to the chorus calling for change.

But that’s not the only reason for this mini episode. This episode is our presenter James’s swan song. A chance for him to say goodbye and pass the torch, if he can find a suitable candidate. We’re very sad to see him go but the Leaving Cert beckons!

James says: "The one thing that’s been the most rewarding, reassuring and hopeful is knowing that I have company in my worries. We’re not alone! A generation of young people are growing up aware of the threat we face and willing to tackle it head on. The next series of Ecolution will go from our oceans to the sky. From whales in Florida to Manta Rays in the Maldives. I’ll be tuning in as a fan! I hope you will too."

Thanks to much to James and we will meet our new presenter very soon...

The new series will return in April. If you’re aged between 8-15 and would like to be a part of the Brain Trust to have your say on issues we’ll tackle please email junior@rte.ie.
