Ireland then and now: Black and Tans pose with a bike

n the early 20th century, Ireland was a theatre of war. How have the locations changed since then?

In the early years of the 20th century, Ireland was a place of conflict. In this interactive series, photographer David Cleary returns to locations captured on film a century ago and takes new photographs showing how those settings have changed - or not.

In this photo from the National Library of Ireland's collection, taken in O'Connell Street, Dublin, during the War of Independence, a group of Black and Tans or Auxiliaries pose proudly beside a motorbike which is perched on the back of a vehicle. It's unclear whether they've captured the motorbike (perhaps from the goggle-wearing man on the left) or are merely transporting it. But from their relaxed poses and beaming smiles, they clearly don't feel like they're in danger.
