Broadcaster Louise Duffy begins with her own family's connection to Crossmolina in County Mayo, but her search soon develops to tell a wider story about the lives of women in 1920s rural Ireland.
With historian Sinéad McCoole, she reveals widows running businesses, young women who were either working or facing emigration, and households sustained by letters from sons and daughters who had emigrated abroad. Much like her own family, whose entry shows a full household at a time just before all bar one of the children emigrated to the UK.
