Civil War Ireland then and now: National Army troops patrol Dublin city centre

In 1922, Ireland was a theatre of war. How have the locations changed since then?

In 1922, Ireland was once more a battlefield, as the Civil War saw conflict break out all over the country. In this interactive series, photographer David Cleary returns to locations captured on film back in 1922 and takes new photographs showing how those settings have changed - or not.

This photo, taken in June 1922, shows National Army troops on patrol on Dame Street in Dublin, just outside City Hall. The gates of Dublin Castle can be seen in the background. The buildings are essentially the same, as is the lamp post, but the three castles of the Dublin crest in the balustrade of City Hall have been badly worn away by air pollution over the last century.
