In 1922, Ireland was once more a battlefield, as the Civil War saw conflict break out all over the country. In this interactive series, photographer David Cleary returns to locations captured on film back in 1922 and takes new photographs showing how those settings have changed - or not.
This photograph, taken in June 1922, shows a gunman at the railings of Nelson's Pillar in the centre of O'Connell Street in Dublin. While the pillar may be long gone, replaced by the spire, the distinctive window of the building at the top of Talbot Street is still there - and if you look closely, you can see the scars on the stonework around it, scars of the violent conflict that raged in the city in the revolutionary decade.
