Corcaigh Abú: A song for the ages on Aistear an Amhráin

The heart-warming story behind The Franks and Walters' After All, the iconic Cork 90s indie anthem, now beloved of a whole new generation thanks to The Young Offenders.

Gach seachtain, fiosraíonn Aistear an Amhráin fréamhacha amhrán a chuaigh agus théann i bhfeidhm fós ar mhuintir na hÉireann. An uair seo, táthar ag díriú ar amhrán a tháinig ó mhuintir chois Laoi, After All le The Frank and Walters.

The early 90s was a time of great change: Ireland elected its first female President, Mary Robinson; South Africa it first black President, Nelson Mandela. The European Single Market was born, and the U.S.S.R. collapsed. Conflict still raged north of the border, Roddy Doyle won the Booker Prize and Ireland qualified for the World Cup.

But the people of Cork didn't care about any of that. Because Corkman Pat Falvey reached the summit of Everest, Niamh Kavanagh won the Eurovision Song Contest in a shed in Millstreet, and a band from Bishopstown were the first Cork band to play Top of the Pops.

The much-anticipated second series of Aistear an Amhráin continues with an episode telling the heart-warming story behind After All, the iconic Cork 90s indie anthem, now beloved of a whole new generation thanks to The Young Offenders.

Cé go bhféadfaí a rá go bhfuil damáiste mór déanta de thionscadal an cheoil le blianta beaga anuas, tá deis anois ag ceol filleadh ar ghlúin nua d'éisteoirí, mar a rinne amhrán de chuid Kate Bush, 'Running Up That Hill' sa chlár teilifíse, Stranger Things. Rinne 'After All' amhlaidh nuair a chualathas é sa chlár The Young Offenders ar RTÉ.
