Gearóidín Uí Fhiric, Principal, Scoil Naomh Pádraig, An Chloch Bhreac, discusses the offer of a rent-free house to help boost school numbers on News at One with Bryan Dobson.
Uí Fhiric told News at One that the school needs to increase its numbers ahead of the next school year or it will lose a teacher. The school, based in the Conamara Gaeltacht is the last of what was a small community, in which there used to be a post office and shop.
If the school loses the teacher, it signifies the beginning of the end not only of the school but of the last semblance of community. Uí Fhiric says the school is situated in beautiful location with many benefits, not least, the chance to send children to an Irish speaking school.
Cé go mbeadh an Ghaeilge ina buntáiste, deir an Príomhoide nach gá go mbeadh Gaeilge ar a dtoil acu siúd a thagann chuig an gceantar. Tá an teach ar cíos ag an scoil ar feadh bliana le tacú leis an bpobal. Tharla amhlaidh ar Inis Meáin agus tháinig breis agus 1600 iarratas chucu siúd a bhí á thairiscint.
