LUÍ LOM is a collaborative project featuring Scottish & Irish musicians Ríona Sally Hartman, Alasdair C Whyte, Ross Whyte & Cian Mac Cárthaigh.
This double A-Side release features the songs Luí Lom and Mar is Miann Leam. Both songs are the result of the four musicians coming together in both Dublin & Glasgow to collaborate on new material sung in Irish and Gàidhlig.
All four musicians involved have very different musical backgrounds and influences, ranging from Traditional to Jazz and Electronica to Indie, to name but a few. The result of this is two songs with their own unique mood and colour. Luí Lom is a lush piano driven lullaby while Mar is Miann Leam is a tense electronic infused song that brings the listener on a journey to the final crescendo. As well as mixing different musical genres, both songs switch seamlessly between Ríona Sally Hartman's Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) and Alasdair C Whyte's Gàidhlig (Scots Gaelic) vocals.
The aim of this project is to cast a light on the new, innovative and exciting styles of music being produced in both languages and to encourage more collaboration between Scottish & Irish artists in the future. LUÍ LOM was supported by the Colmcille Fund, a partnership between Foras na Gaeilge in Ireland and Bòrd na Gàidhlig in Scotland which fosters communication and collaboration between the language communities of Scottish and Irish Gaelic.
"it was so interesting co-writing in a language I don't speak. When writing I’d intentionally hold off on reading a translation of the Gàidhlig lyrics and would first listen to what Alasdair had sung and try to recognise some words that we have in common in both languages, like "snaidhm", a knot. There’s something in there for everyone, whether or not you speak Irish or Gàidhlig, but I think Gàidhlig and Irish speakers will enjoy the wordplay and the various ways the lyrics can be interpreted" - Ríona
