Do you remember the Gaeilge for Daffodil?

The Irish for daffodil reminds us of how words work differently in various languages. Lus an Chromchinn is daffodil as Gaeilge but what does it literally translate as?

Lus is another word for bláth/flower- for example, The Botanic Garden are Garraithe Náisiúnta na Lus.

The second part of the term refers to the head of the flower being bent over, as it is. The verb Crom could be used like this: Chrom mé síos leis boladh na mbláthanna a fháil- I bent down to get the smell of the flowers.

Ná déan dearmad, today is Daffodil Day agus tá an tacaíocht ag teastáil.
