How to get it together for the Irish Oral: Tips from an examiner

On StaidAir le Bláthnaid Treacy on 2FM, Sarah Murphy, a teacher and examiner, spoke about how to prepare for your Irish oral and what the examiners are looking for.

Sarah explained the Irish Oral comes in two parts; the first, a series of sraith pictiúr from which the examiner chooses and the second, a chat based mostly around yourself.

Múinteoir Murphy suggests getting to know yourself and what you'd like to talk about is the best idea because the examiner would like the student to lead the conversation, not the other way around.

Sarah told Bláthnaid that one of the biggest issues in the exam is students being nervous. In order to put the student at ease, examiners try and start the exam with an open question, giving the student lots of scope to lead the conversation into a topic with which they are comfortable.

Sarah says the more you speak, the better you will get on because the exam focusing on fluency and ease with the language rather than perfectly accurate grammar.
