Faoi Bhláth: The Irish for our favourite flowers

Ireland's biggest gardening event, Bloom takes place this weekend in Dublin. Every year, attendees are blown away by colour, creativity and natural beauty. It got us thinking about the best in show when it comes to Irish translations for floral and fauna.

Fuchsia in Irish  is 'deora Dé', which literally translates as 'God's tears' as adopted by people of Corca Dhuibhne as their bloom of choice.

Daffodil which hails the beginning of spring, is known as lus an chromchinn, the bloom of the bent head.

The Irish for that which reminds us of the hazy days of childhood, the daisy, is nóinín. Nóinín i measc na neantóg poetically translates as 'a daisy amongst the nettles'.

May blossom, generally known as the hawthorn translates as 'bláth na sceiche gile', the bloom of the bright bush.

and lastly, though not exactly related to the blooms, we couldn't resist this one:

To see through rose-tinted glasses translates as 'feiceann sé/sí mil ar chuiseogach i ngach áit- he/she sees honey on the tall-stemmed grass'

Bloom takes place in 31st MAY – 4th JUNE 2018, 9am – 6pm  in Phoenix Park
