Surf, kayak, downward dog: The New Age of Campaí Samhraidh.

Surfing, yoga and kayaking aren't synonymous with language learning but Dún Laoghaire-based Moontour and Freedom Surf School in Tramore, Waterford have tapped into a new wave of activity-based education.

During his time living in the Amazon, Seán Greif, founder of Moontour, learnt Portuguese by fishing, exploring and chatting with the locals. In just a few months, his Portuguese was as good as his Irish.

As an Irish teacher, he was curious as to what had made learning Portuguese so easy. He realised by simply using and enjoying the language, in a fun environment, he had picked up the local lingo in no time. Seán was excited about trying this learning style with Irish, and the idea for Moontour was born!

Similarly, Freedom has incorporated its love for the Irish language within its outdoor activities and has developed Freedom Scoil Surfála 'is Ionad Gníomhaíochta Teanga. By using sport and outdoor activities to promote and teach Irish, people are finding that the Irish language can be fun and easy to learn within this environment. There is a powerful link between doing and learning therefore by experiencing an exciting outdoor activity and learning a language has proven to be a very successful learning combination.
