Beginning with Stephen Fry’s musings on Wednesday 1st March, RTÉ will share specially recorded messages in and on the Irish language by a number of well-known personalities.
Through a series of short videos RTÉ will also bring you on a colourful whistle stop tour of Gaeilge in the wild as part of Random Acts as Gaeilge.
This is in addition to a range of specially produced Irish language content across RTÉ’s four radio stations, RTÉ Player, RTÉ Archives, RTÉ.ie and on RTÉ One through to St. Patricks’ Day as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge on RTÉ.
The highlights
- RTÉ 2fm will air bilingual news bulletins from 7am - 1pm daily, presented by Audrey Donohoe, while Irish speaker, Eoghan McDermott will again be joined by actor Clíona Ní Chiosáin for a daily, bilingual blas to his drivetime show.
- Seo Linn will join up with 2FM for a live music session on the back of the release of their single "Rise", their debut album "Solas" and their Irish language fun book also called "Solas" which has been produced for primary schools throughout Ireland.
- Also on 2FM, Breakfast Republic will host their very own Irish music festival on a bus called "Coach Eile".
- On RTÉ Radio 1, in addition to Irish language content across the schedule, including The History Show, The Book on One and Sunday Miscellany, Drama on One will broadcast two plays in Irish: ‘Líon mo Bhearna’ (an adaptation of the Dublin Fringe Festival award-winning Tick My Box) by Sorcha Fox and Emer O’Connell, translated into Irish by Rossa Ó Snodaigh, and produced for radio by Kevin Reynolds on Sunday 5th March; An Duairaceán by Aodh Ó Domhnaill with actors Diarmaid de Faoite, Sinéad Ní Uallacháin and Niall Tóibín, with especially composed music by Mick Kinsella. on Sunday 12th March.
- It's Seachtain na Gaeilge every week on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, but this year the station has produced a series of videos with presenters in Connemara, Donegal, Kerry and Dublin to help people 'speak like a native' by sharing some colloquial Irish phrases particular to each, including, 'How's the form?', 'I'm knackered', 'He lost the plot' and many more. The videos will be share on their Facebook (Raidió na Gaeltachta (Oifigiúil)) and Twitter (@RTERnaG) channels.

— RTÉ (@rte) March 1, 2017 - On St. Patrick's Day, Doireann Ní Bhriain will present the RTÉ lyric fm Friday Concert (8pm-10pm) live from the National Concert Hall with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra playing the music of Irish composers, Bill Whelan and Shaun Davey, conducted by David Brophy, with Liam O'Flynn on uilleann pipes.
- Also on St. Patrick’s Day, RTÉ One’s parade coverage will be co-hosted by Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, while RTÉ One’s Six-One news will have a distinct Irish-language focus.
- RTÉ Player’s special Seachtain na Gaeilge collection will include Classic Irish language content as well as previews of all the Random Acts as Gaeilge clips.
- RTÉ Archives will be sharing hidden gems daily throughout #SnaG on rte.ie/archives and on Twitter and Facebook (@RTEArchives), including a 1968 clip featuring one of six American students who were in Cork to learn Irish and a 1964 clip showing members of the public discussing plans to make Galway an Irish speaking city.
- RTÉ’s #SnaG hub (www.rte.ie/SnaG) will be regularly updated with links to a vast range of special Irish language content across RTÉ One, RTÉ radio ((Radio 1, 2fm, lyric fm, Raidio na Gaeltachta), RTÉ Player and, RTÉ Archives.
