Downton Abbey opens its doors to royals in first trailer

The first trailer for the Downton Abbey movie has been released and, as expected, Maggie Smith steals the show once again as the wisecracking Dowager Countess.

The film, which is released in cinemas in September, sees writer-creator Julian Fellowes setting up the Crawley family to welcome the most important guests in Downton's history.

"They live like royalty," says the onscreen caption. "But are they ready for the real thing?"

With "a royal luncheon, a parade and a dinner" planned, the Downton staff are in no mood for any visiting entourage to steal their thunder and are determined "to defend Downton's honour".

By the looks of the trailer, there'll be plenty of romance to go with the comedy.

Downton Abbey is released in cinemas on Friday, September 13.
