The Making a Murderer documentary series had viewers glued to their screens when it was released on Netflix back in 2015, and now a new follow-up series is being made.

The series, called Convicting a Murderer, is being made by documentary filmmaker Shawn Rech, who will direct and produce the eight-part series with his partner, Andrew Hale.

Making a Murderer from filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos followed Steven Avery, a man from Wisconsin who was exonerated after a wrongful rape conviction, only to be convicted of the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach along with his nephew, Brendan Dassey.

The new series from Rech will concentrate on the legal case built against Avery and Dassey.

"When Making a Murderer was produced, many on the law enforcement side of the story could not, or would not, participate in the series, which resulted in a one-sided analysis of the case," Rech said in a statement.

"This docu-series will examine the case and the allegations of police wrongdoing from a broader perspective. It will also share with viewers the traumatic effects of being found guilty and vilified in the court of public opinion."

For the series, Rech got access to District Attorney Ken Kratz, lead investigator Tom Fassbender, and other notable figures in the case against Avery.

Rech added about his approach to Convicting a Murderer: "We fight for the truth.

"We’ll present all of the evidence in the Avery case from the perspective of both the prosecution and the defense and see if viewers feel the same way they did two years ago following the first season of Making A Murderer."

Making a Murderer creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos are also currently working on an official sequel to their Netflix documentary show but it is not known when it will hit screens.

After Making a Murderer was released there was speculation that Avery and Dassey's convictions might be overturned, but this has not happened. In December, a US appeals court upheld Dassey's conviction
