The 2015 Emmy Awards take place at the Microsoft Theater in Hollywood tonight, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg making his debut as the host.

It's the biggest night of the year for US television - their Oscars - and RTÉ TEN will be live all night to make sure you're fully informed about the big winners and the shock losers.

So, who are the main contenders and who's likely to win? Here are the ten key categories:

Best Drama Series

And the nominees are . . .

Better Call Saul

Game of Thrones

Orange is the New Black

Mad Men

Homeland

Downton Abbey

House of Cards

TEN favours: Better Call Saul

TEN tips: Better Call Saul

The critically-adored Mad Men may get a farewell Emmy to acknowledge its special place in TV history, but it seems odds-on that Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul will be the winner if quality rather than sentiment is the deciding factor.

Best Comedy Series

And the nominees are . . .

Parks and Recreation

Transparent

Louie

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Modern Family

Silicon Valley

Veep

TEN favours: Veep

TEN tips: Veep

American comedy is quite strong these days, but there's no denying that Veep is on a roll. It may lack the vicious satire of The Thick of It - its British inspiration - but there's no questioning its comedy credentials. Only Silicon Valley come close.

Best Actress in a Drama Series

And the nominees are . . .

Taraji P Henson as Cookie Lyon in Empire

Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison in Homeland

Robin Wright as Claire Underwood House of Cards

Viola Davis as Annalise Keating in How to Get Away With Murder

Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson in Mad Men

Tatiana Maslany as Alison/ Cosima/ Helena/ Rachel and Krystal/ Sarah in Orphan Black

TEN favours: Viola Davis

TEN tips: Viola Davis

Taraji P Henson was born for the role of Cookie in Empire and will win another year, but I'd question the sanity of the electorate if Viola Davis doesn't get gold for her jaw-dropping turn in Shonda Rhimes' wilfully confusing whodunit.

Best Actor in a Drama Series

And the nominees are . . .

Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill in Better Call Saul

Kyle Chandler as John Rayburn in Bloodline

Kevin Spacey as Francis Underwood in House of Cards

Jon Hamm as Don Draper Mad Men

Liev Schreiber as Ray Donovan in Ray Donovan

Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy in The Newsroom

TEN favours: Jeff Daniels

TEN tips: John Hamm

This one could go anywhere as all are genuine contenders. And while Jeff Daniels stormed a singular path through The Newsroom, John Hamm might just wing it with his final run on Mad Men as ambiguous everyman Don Draper.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

And the nominees are . . .

Uzo Aduba as Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' Warren in Orange Is the New Black

Christine Baranski as Diane Lockhart in The Good Wife

Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones

Joanne Froggatt as Anna Bates in Downton Abbey

Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones

Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris in Mad Men

TEN favours: Christine Baranski

TEN tips: Christina Hendricks

Like a lot of this year's awards, Mad Men may get something here on the back of a sympathy vote. Christine Baranski's been in career-defining form for years on The Good Wife, but no one would deny the wonderful Christina Hendricks for her outstanding work as Mad Men's pivotal Joan Harris.

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

And the nominees are . . .

Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut on Better Call Saul

Jim Carter as Charles Carson on Downton Abbey

Alan Cumming as Eli Gold on The Good Wife

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones

Michael Kelly as Doug Stamper on House of Cards

Ben Mendelsohn as Danny Rayburn on Bloodline

TEN favours: Jonathan Banks

TEN tips: Peter Dinklage

Game of Thrones got several nominations and here's where they stand the best chance of a win. But if Peter Dinklage does win, he's going to do it the hard way by beating an irresistible Jonathan Banks in Better Call Saul.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series

And the nominees are . . .

Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton on Nurse Jackie

Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish on The Comeback

Julia Louis-Dreyfus as President Selina Meyer on Veep

Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation

Amy Schumer as Amy/Various Characters on Inside Amy Schumer

Lily Tomlin as Frankie Bergstein on Grace and Frankie

TEN favours: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

TEN tips: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

There's something unconvincing about flavour of the minute Amy Schumer, but the rest of the nominations here would all be very credible winners. But Julia Louis-Dreyfus is on a different planet as Selena Meyer and is even better than when she played Elaine Bennis in Seinfeld. There is no higher praise.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series

And the nominees are . . .

Anthony Anderson as Andre 'Dre' Johnson Sr in Black-ish

Don Cheadle as Marty Kaan in House of Lies

Louis CK as Louie in Louie

Will Forte as Phil 'Tandy' Miller in The Last Man on Earth

Matt LeBlanc as Himself in Episodes

William H Macy as Frank Gallagher in Shameless

Jeffrey Tambor as Morton 'Maura' Pfefferman in Transparent

TEN favours: Louis CK

TEN tips: Jeffrey Tambor

Have to admit that I've yet to see Transparent, but by all accounts Jefferey Tambor is a cert here. From what I have seen Louise CK deserves to finally land an acting Emmy as he's improved immeasurably in that regard since Louie began.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

And the nominees are . . .

Mayim Bialik as Dr Amy Farrah Fowler in The Big Bang Theory

Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy in Modern Family

Anna Chlumsky as Amy Brookheimer in Veep

Gaby Hoffmann as Alexandria “Ali” Pfefferman in Transparent

Allison Janney as Bonnie Plunkett in Mom

Jane Krakowski as Jacqueline Voorhees in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Kate McKinnon as Various Characters in Saturday Night Live

Niecy Nash as Denise 'DiDi' Ortley in Getting On

TEN favours: Anna Chlumsky

TEN tips: Allison Janney

Veep is up for several awards and can't win them all, so despite a superb performance as the career woman who self-combusts, Anna Chlumsky may lose out. The effortlessly amazing Allison Janney nailed it from day one on Mom, but she's wasted on this otherwise tame comedy.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

And the nominees are . . .

Andre Braugher as Captain Ray Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Tituss Burgess as Titus Andromedon in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy in Modern Family

Adam Driver as Adam Sackler in Girls

Tony Hale as Gary Walsh in Veep

Keegan-Michael Key as Various Characters in Key & Peele

TEN favours: Andre Braugher

TEN tips: Tituss Burgess

Andre Braugher is quite possibly the most underrated TV actor of his generation. He was superb as Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street and then Owen Thoreau Jr on Men of a Certain Age. Third time around he's the straight gay man delivering laughs on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. And remember, fellow BNN star Andy Samberg is hosting this year's Emmys. So Burgess is a shoo-in.

We'll be bringing you all of the action from the Emmys as it happens from the moment the stars hit the red carpet.
