John Byrne’s TV choices for the week ahead (Dates covered: Sat Sept 6 – Friday 12)
Plenty of new and returning shows this week – from Imelda May to Strictly and a Michael Bay-directed drama, but sadly it's also goodbye to Veep.
Pick of the week
The Last Ship (Fridays, Sky 1)
This is the second time Michael Bay - the director behind the Bad Boys and Transformers franchises - has waded into small screen waters and this ten-part, post-apocalyptic drama promises plenty of breakneck action from the start. After four months of radio silence, Captain Tom Chandler (a now beardless Eric Dane, from Grey's Anatomy) and the 200-plus crew of the USS Nathan James are leaving the Arctic and heading home - or so they think. A seemingly routine mission takes an unexpected turn when they come under attack from a renegade team of Russian forces. A sceptical Chandler wants to know the real reason behind their voyage, answers duly provided by scientist Dr Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra, Strike Back). Cue the bad news. While the USS Nathan James has been out at sea, 80% of the planet's population has been wiped out by a global pandemic, a killer virus for which Scott has been tasked to find a cure.

Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist) stars as Harry Houdini as he finds fame, engages in espionage, battles spiritualists and encounters the greatest names of the era, from US presidents to Arthur Conan Doyle and Rasputin. While it lacks the almost psychotic edge of its British inspiration The Thick of It, Veep has developed into one of the best comedies of recent years, with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss in magnificent, multi-award-winning form as VP Selina Meyer. The third season of Armando Iannucci’s biting political comedy concludes with a double bill of episodes. Comedy of the week
Mom (Tuesday, RTÉ Two)
This is pretty much run-of-the-mill stuff from Chuck Lorre, but any show that features the wonderful Alison Janney is always worth a look, and a couple of weeks ago she won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role as Bonnie Plunkett, the grandmother in Mom. In this week's episode, mom Christy is nervous about going on a romantic weekend getaway with Adam. Meanwhile, restaurant manager Gabriel's wife, Claudia, suspects he is cheating and seeks comfort from Christy.
Here's an interview with Alison Janney on US TV:
On Demand
The Blacklist, Sky Living
Here's a chance to catch up with the entire first season of this fun drama about a major crook helping the FBI for his own ends.
