Over the past six weeks, I have had the pleasure of witnessing some of the finest and most talented acting that Irish TV has to offer. With the right combination of well planned storylines backed by a satisfying amount of twists and sufficient character development, Raw quickly became my favourite show of 2012.
In previous blogs, I grew quite impatient about the answers to several trivial questions that were raised during the series. However, last night’s final episode pushed the dramatic boundaries and exceeded all of my expectations.
It was heartwarming to watch the usually unaffectionate and somewhat cold Geoff letting his guard down with Pavel. The chemistry and warmth between the pair was electric, and I found myself rooting even more for the lovebirds in this episode (even though it meant I would have to accept that Geoff would be moving to Prague).
The scene where Geoff finds Pavel on the office stairs dead, was haunting and sent chills down my spine. It was a storyline that I never predicted would happen. The acting was superb, and Geoff played the part of the traumatised and inconsolable lover to perfection. It will be interesting to see how the plot progresses in the foreseeable future. Could this mean the return of Selina?
To further tug at our heartstrings Philip stood up to his abusive father once and for all, while Jojo finally realised that she is her own worst enemy. Her speech to Geoff was full of emotion and passion. I may have shed a tear or two.
In fairness, Raw wouldn’t survive without Jojo as the leading lady. It was hardly surprising that she was given her job back. I predict in the future that Geoff and Jojo may disappear off to Prague to live Pavel’s dream.
It was a breath of fresh air to see Ed coming to the rescue for once, and for Fiona to embrace the situation instead of overreacting. I was also impressed with Dan’s philosophical words of wisdom. I thought that there would have been more of an emphasis on Dan in the finale. However, it was insightful to watch how his three daughters reacted to the situation, and I found myself empathising with all of the characters involved.
I finally warmed to Emma this week, and hope that she makes a return to Raw if there is to be a new series. Her optimism and enthusiastic character could make a real impact in future episodes. She may even be a shoulder to cry on for poor Geoff?
A worthwhile and thoroughly enjoyable series with a smashing soundtrack to boot.
Raw you will be missed!
