Cher has confirmed that a new musical based on her life will take to the Broadway stage next year.

News of a possible musical production looking back at the music icon's life surfaced in January, when the 71 year old singer, Grammy, Emmy and Oscar winner attended a read-through of the production.

The as yet un-named musical will feature Cher's extensive back catalogue of music including chart-toppers such as I Got You Babe and If I Could Turn Back Time and according to reports, Jason Moore, who's best known for his work on Pitch Perfect will direct the show.

It's understood three different actresses will portray Cher at various points in her life from singing backup vocals as a teenager, to meeting with her late husband Sonny Bono in 1962, to her acting and pop renaissance in the 80s and 90s.

During her rollercoaster marriage she enjoyed huge chart and TV success as part of the duo Sonny & Cher prior to their divorce in 1975.

Afterwards she successfully reinvented herself as a pop icon and movie star, in films such as The Witches of Eastwick and Mask, culminating in an Oscar for her role in the 1988 comedy Moonstruck.

Last night the singer confirmed the stage show was going ahead to her Twitter followers.

The Queen of reinvention had her towering status in the music industry made official last month after was honoured with the Icon Award at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.

She took over the stage to perform the biggest hit of her career - the 90's anthem Believe - along with If I Could Turn Back Time looking every inch the superstar in a spangly silver ensemble and blonde wig with pink tips.
