With his former bandmate Gaz Coombes just nominated for the Mercury Prize, this debut solo offering from Danny Goffey of Supergrass arrives at a good time. It’s an instantly likeable and infectious pop collection that’s half impish Blur b-side and half Ian Dury bloke rock.
Governed by a slapdash and slapstick electro pop approach, there are traces of Goffey’s old band on the buzzsaw guitars of Trials Of A Modern Man, Episode recalls one of Graham Coxon’s solo forays, while Race Of Life takes nothing less than a sperm’s eye view of the moment of conception.
It’s not all throwaway antics; Goffey reveals a real way with a Beatles pastiche on the lovely Alfie Loves The Birds. Take Your Jacket Off & Get Into It is superior geezer pop.
