Southpaw – 2001 – 38 minutes
"What would you do if you saw spaceships?" asks Mogwai frontman Stuart Braithwaite on their third album. The answer is play this because you know whoever's inside will like it just as much as you do. If Tortoise are the scientists of the post-rock universe then Mogwai are its ghosts, haunting amps and speakers with the fade-in, fade-out beauty of their ambient adventures.
No-one makes guitars cry quite like the Glaswegian quintet and while the album title may suggest that they've sold their (lost) souls to Black Sabbath, the truth inside is far more gentle and beguiling. Picking up where 1998's 'Come On Die Young' trailed off, 'Rock Action' sees them twist and turn textures as string sections combine with nursery rhyme wonder to create their most moving drama to date.
Lie back and listen, you may look at the ceiling but in your head you'll see the stars.
