Moscow Never Sleeps needs more oomph in the story

The Johnny O'Reilly-directed Moscow Never Sleeps knits five episodic stories, set in the eponymous city in the style of Robert Altman's Short Cuts. Unfortunately the narrative does not gel into a convincing whole.

Russian film Leviathan tipped for Oscar glory

The Russian film, Leviathan, is in strong contention for Best Foreign Language film tonight at the Oscars. The film's own history would probably make a fine documentary in its own right.

Leviathan

This documentary is a sea shanty without words but it is also ravishing visual art, as life on board a fishing trawler is revealed in all its hardships.
