Andrew Scott features in an audiobook adaptation of Russell Tovey's debut novel

Andrew Scott and George MacKay will star as brothers in the audio book of actor Russell Tovey's debut novel.

Due to be released on 1 July, Starlings is set in the heart of Clapham in London and explores family estrangement and queer identity

It will star Scott, best known for his roles in Fleabag and Sherlock, alongside 1917’s MacKay. Tovey also stars in the production.

Tovey’s literary debut follows Donald (Scott), a 40-something aspiring drag queen, who has spent years "masking deep bitterness behind sharp wit and painted nails".

After being exiled from his northern home town by his father for wearing women’s clothes, he has "avoided confronting his past for decades, surrounding himself with an unruly group of friends as he navigated his identity".

However, when his enigmatic younger brother, Owen (MacKay) unexpectedly appears at his door following their father’s death, Donald is "forced to reckon with old wounds as the brothers reunite after years apart".

It has been teased that the novel follows the brothers as they "attempt to reconcile their shared history and heal past trauma".

The voice cast also includes Hard Truth’s Michele Austin, The White Lotus’s Julian Kostov and Unicorns’ Jason Patel, as well as iconic drag performers Dosa Cat, Gigi Zahir and That Girl.

The novel has specifically been created for audio, using sound design to transport listeners into the heart of London’s LGBT+ scene.

Speaking about the upcoming release, Tovey said: "It’s been the biggest privilege to bring this story and these characters alive with the best team at Audible and the most perfect and gifted cast of actors.

"This is a world and a community that I admire and love so much and hope in turn listeners will fall in love with too."

Tovey, 44, is best known for playing werewolf George Sands in the BBC’s supernatural comedy-drama Being Human. He also appeared in The History Boys, Him & Her, Looking and American Horror Story: NYC.

The audiobook will be released exclusively on Audible on 1 July.
