Matthew Broderick set to star in Ulster American at the Abbey Theatre

Matthew Broderick is to appear at the Abbey Theatre this August in a limited run of David Ireland's Ulster American.

The Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Producers star will lead the Irish Repertory Theatre’s production of the play, which runs on the Abbey Stage from 12 to 22 August 2026.

Directed by Irish Repertory Theatre Artistic Director Ciarán O’Reilly, the production will also star Max Baker and Geraldine Hughes.

Ulster American is a satirical comedy about identity, privilege, power and the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles.

The Abbey announced the production as part of its 2026 programme, which also includes two world premieres for the Dublin Theatre Festival.

ANIMALS, based on the short fiction of Blindboyboatclub, has been adapted and directed by Dan Colley and will run on the Abbey Stage from 23 September to 7 November 2026.

Eoghan Quinn’s new play visions, directed by Claire O’Reilly, will run on the Peacock Stage from 2 October to 14 November 2026.

The programme also includes the Irish premiere of Marina Carr’s Mirandolina, adapted from Carlo Goldoni’s La Locandiera, which runs from 28 August to 5 September 2026.

The Abbey has also announced two works-in-progress as part of Shedinburgh’s inaugural Shed Originals initiative: Shaun Dunne’s BULK and an adaptation of Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s A Ghost in the Throat by Ursula Rani Sarma.

Tickets for ANIMALS and visions are now on sale, while tickets for Ulster American will go on sale in early June.
