Behind the music - Dolium x LiVES

DOLIUM
Dolium

UK acts Dolium and LiVES have teamed up for new song, Shame!. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Dolium reformed in 2024 for the 20th Anniversary of their label, Sister 9 Recordings, and released a limited-edition 4CD box set, The Products Of Our Own Demands And Commands.

Cornwall act LiVES released their debut album Let Them Eat Cake in 2024 and their track Just Can't Get Enough reached a wider audience through its placement on the Netflix series Lucifer.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Rhys (Dolium): I own at least three worn out copies of The Fall's 1978 Peel Session on vinyl. I once shattered a car windscreen with my mind. I'm more than happy to wear gloves in the summer.

How would you describe your music?

Peter (LiVES): LiVES music is heavy, riff-driven rock, with a socio-political commentary/lyrics. It's emotional raw and loud. For the new single Shame!, we teamed up with Dolium because we love their vibe of scuzzy, dirty rock. We both have a lot to scream about.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Rhys: First off, it’s Orpheus, man - apparently, that dude could make music powerful enough to almost raise the dead. After that, I’d have to include Kurt Cobain, Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Abner Jay, Captain Beefheart and Bo Diddley. I didn’t say Nervous Norvus, did I?

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Peter Chisholm (LiVES): Paul McCartney, Cornwall Coliseum.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Rhys: Honestly, I think that might have been Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor, hahaha. I loved the Rocky films growing up and that 7" was in a bargain bin type thing somewhere in South Yorkshire. I couldn’t resist. In fact, I think I still have it.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Peter: The new song we’re recording, I’m sat in the studio right now, it’s called Insignificant Noise.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Rhys: "Just like life, there’s a good beginning but there is no middle, so you may as well skip to the end" - Dan Treacy from Jackanory Stories by Television Personalities.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Peter: Oh come on!!! hahaha - that’s impossible to answer! How about birdsong? Can that count? Yeah, birdsong, I’ll go with that!
