Formed in 2024, Needy Pet previously took on Irish mental health services on their song Mental Health and the manosphere on Alpha Male. Their upcoming fourth single, No Soul, is an anti-war protest song.

Boring To Me was inspired by "frustration at those who don't engage with the world around them. It expresses pure rage at indifference".

"These days the world is on fire, but it's the only present we have. We have to keep going, keep fighting and keep learning. Don't settle for boring - get educated!" says lead singer Jenny Q.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Ross: I really like wraps. I don't wear hats. Me and Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy were once at the Aillwee Caves in Co. Clare at the exact same time in 2012.

How would you describe your music?

Jenny: Someone we know once described us as glam punk. We didn’t really fight against that description because we aren’t a standard by numbers punk band and Ross doesn’t own any tartan trousers. We like hooks and Hendrixisms and we all smell really good as well.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Jenny: We’re a very eclectic band. I think we’re very inspired by proto-punk at our core but I’m deeply affected by female rock stars. I loved Hole and The Distillers growing up so I have a bit of that in me by osmosis. Needy Pet’s inspirations are probably closer to Amyl and The Sniffers, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith and The Stooges. I think I just love the sound of loud abrasive women. I myself consider myself a bit of a dweeb but I have a very loud voice.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Jenny. I went to Foo Fighters when they played what was then The Point Depot back when I was 15 with my best friend Linda. Her dad got us tickets. I liked all the big loud rockin’ songs, I didn’t care for their mournful ballads. I remember being deaf afterwards. I remember a girl at school scoffing at me for being in the seated section and not the pit. Maybe I’m compensating for that lack of street cred now.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Ross: The Elvis Vs JXL Remix of A Little Less Conversation for that Nike football ad with Eric Cantona. It’s a class song.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Ross: Sad Old Woman by Problem Patterns from their 2025 EP Boring Songs for Boring People. They’re probably the best band in Ireland at the moment.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Jenny: There’s a lyric from Hole’s song Plump from Live Through This that goes., "I don’t do the dishes; I throw them in the crib". It’s such a good lyric because it's so evocative of feminine frustration despite being so simple. It's just punchy and succinct. I know it's a very old example but I like catchy lyrics that say so much in simple terms. I try to do that in our songs to the best of my ability.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Ross: Dog Dribble by Getdown Services. It makes my brain spin around for reasons I can’t put into words.
