Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro said they "hit it off immediately" while making their new romantic comedy One Night Only.

The film comes from director Will Gluck, known for Anyone But You and Easy A, and stars Barbaro and Turner as Allie and Owen, two strangers who meet in a heightened version of New York City on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex.

The film, which also stars Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton, follows the pair as they cross paths during a chaotic night when everyone around them appears to be chasing connection.

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Barbaro said she was drawn in by the film's unusual premise and the chance to work with Turner.

"Callum’s such a talented actor. I had admired his work on several of his projects," she said.

"The film itself has such a great premise. It just grabs you and you can’t help but continue thinking about it and wondering what the story will be that will unfold in that almost dystopian kind of reality."

Turner said he was equally excited to work opposite Barbaro, saying: "Monica is an incredible actress, so for me it was very exciting to go toe-to-toe with you."

He also praised Gluck, saying: "Will Gluck has made some of the greatest rom-coms ever, so I felt in completely safe hands with him and with you."

Turner added that the three of them "hit it off immediately" and were able to be "daring and stupid and full throttle" on set, calling the experience "really liberating".

Barbaro said the rom-coms she loves most are the ones that capture awkward, recognisable moments.

"What I love about rom-coms is the way they sit with you later," she said.

She added that, while making One Night Only, they tried to find "the bits and pieces that made it feel like a real human experience".

The pair also joked about laughing through a night shoot involving a mannequin and an ATM, with Turner saying Gluck kept encouraging them to try new things and "remould the scene" as they filmed.

One Night Only is due for release in cinemas this August.
