Watch: Chris O'Dowd on escaping parents' WhatsApp groups

Chris O’Dowd has joked that he found an unusual way to remove himself from the "merry hell" of parents’ WhatsApp groups.

Speaking on Friday night’s Late Late Show, the Roscommon actor said he struggled with the constant messages while living in America.

"I feel like it’s sort of demonic…" he joked of the groups.

O’Dowd said his wife, Dawn O'Porter, was "all over them", but he found them overwhelming.

"I’m like, it’s way too much information, way too much admin," he said.

The Bridesmaids and The IT Crowd star said he decided to put people off asking him to help with school events by repeatedly sending odd messages into the chat.

"I would say things after people had been talking about a specific event, I would say things like, 'By the way, did anybody find my other shoe?’" he said.

"And then they would go off, and nobody would say anything about it. And then I would just keep asking them about my missing shoe until they stopped contacting me at all."

O’Dowd joked that it was a useful way of avoiding being handed extra responsibilities.

"Nobody is going to make you feel responsible for their child if they think you are the one who wants you on," he said.
