"It's speculated that people caught in addiction choose to stay on that path. But from my experience, they’re often painfully self-aware, remorseful, and stuck," says Cathal.
"This song is for those people - to remind them they’re not alone. Specialists say the opposite of addiction is connection, and I hope this track connects with anyone who needs to know their pain isn’t just theirs."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I'm a dad to the most incredible human being imaginable. I need to hug a tree once a week to not feel depressed. I have a very strong feeling that everything will work out just how it’s supposed to.
How would you describe your music?
Almost like your nan’s baking - it’s made with love. It crossed a few genres - singer/songwriter, folk, pop, but the recipe stays the same - me playing the guitar badly, me writing lyrics that don’t always make sense, and my best friends making their instruments sing to save the day.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Damien Rice, Tom Waits, Christy Moore, David Gray, Bob Dylan, Hozier, Ed Sheeran, Zach Bryan, Eminem, my dad, my secondary school music teacher, Ms O Leary, my English teachers, Ger O Kelly and Declan O Flynn.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
My dad brought me to Christy Moore in the Marquee and The Fureys in the Cork Opera House when I was young. I'd be spoofing if I knew which one was first.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Eminem - The Eminem Show. It wasn’t the first one I bought but the first CD I ever got - for my tenth birthday from my uncle.
What’s your favourite song right now?
The Top of Bín Bán - Pa Sheehy. A masterpiece.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"I know I’m bound to die one day, so when I reach those golden gates, I’ll pray they say I did the best I can" - Zach Bryan. And "Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword" - Hozier
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I’ve honestly no idea - I’d get fierce bored of any song I had to listen to forever, but let’s throw down Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley for the craic.
Where can people find your music/more information?
Instagram, Linktree, Spotify.
